When your parents were young, people could buy cigarettes and smoke virtually anywhere, even in hospitals! Cigarette advertising was everywhere. Currently, we are more aware of what smoking is bad for our health. Cigarettes are restricted or prohibited in virtually all public places and companies that manufacture cigarettes and can not do propaganda on buses or trains, road signs, television and in many magazines. Almost everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema and heart disease, that can shorten your life by 10 years or more and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars annually.

So why do people still smoke? The answer is very simple: it is an addiction. Once you start is very difficult to quit smoking is a habit hard to break because the snuff contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. As with heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind so quickly get used to the nicotine that the person needs to consume to feel good. Almost no smoker begins to smoke as adults. Statistics show that approximately 9 out of 10 smokers start before 18 years of age. Some teens who smoke say they start because they think it makes them look bigger (and it is true, as long as you want to have yellow teeth and wrinkles). Others smoke because they believe it helps them relax (but not, in fact, the heart beats faster while a person smokes).

Some start smoking as a way to feel rebellious or to differentiate (which works if you want your friends have to wait somewhere else while you smoke). Others start because their friends smoke, or simply because they have something to do. Some people, especially girls, start smoking because they think it can control your weight. The diseases that smoking can cause, such as lung diseases or cancer, do cause weight loss, but not a very good way to lose weight! Another of the reasons why people start smoking is because members of your family makes. Most adults who started smoking in their teens never thought they would become addicted. That’s why people say they would have been much easier not to start smoking. The advertisements of cigarettes from the time when your parents were young convinced many of them that smoking was glamorous, striking or fascinating, although in reality is something repugnant-smelling, expensive and unhealthy.

The cigarette ads in the 1940s even showed doctors who recommended the cigarette as a way to relax! The cigarette ads still show smokers as attractive and modern, sophisticated and elegant, or rebellious and cool. The good news is that now these ads are not so visible and are less effective than before: in the same way that doctors are more sensible about cigarettes today than in the previous generation, teenagers are more aware of how manipulative they can be advertisements. The government has also passed laws that limit where and how you can advertise tobacco companies to help children avoid the vice of smoking.

How did the cigarette your health There are no physical reasons to start smoking: the body does not need snuff in the way it needs food, water, sleep and exercise. In fact, many of the chemicals in cigarettes, like nicotine and cyanide, are actually poisons that can kill in high enough doses. The body is smart and defended when it is being poisoned.

What are the short term?
When a person smokes a cigarette, the body responds immediately to the nicotine contained in smoke. The nicotine causes a short-term increase in blood pressure, heart rate and blood flow from the heart. It also causes the arteries to narrow. Carbon monoxide reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry. This, combined with the effects produced by nicotine, creates an imbalance in the demand for oxygen by the cells and the amount of oxygen the blood can carry.

What are your long-term effects?
It is now well known to all that smoking can cause chronic lung diseases, heart disease and stroke, and cancer of the lung, larynx, esophagus, mouth and bladder. In addition, the consumption of snuff is known to contribute to cancer of the cervix, pancreas and kidneys. Researchers have identified more than 40 chemicals in the smoke of snuff to cause cancer in humans and animals.

The snuff and cigars also have deadly consequences, including lung cancer, larynx, esophagus, and oral cancer. The harmful effects of smoking do not end with the smoker.

Women who use snuff during pregnancy are more likely to have adverse birth outcomes, including babies with low birth weight, which is linked with an increased risk of infant death and a variety of child health disorders. The health of nonsmokers is affected by environmental smoke snuff. The snuff smoke exposure both adults and children, who may suffer respiratory diseases and respiratory infections. The evidence also indicates that exposure to smoke snuff increases the risk of heart disease.

If you are considering quitting smoking , you probably want to know some good reasons to help you decide. We have known for a long time that snuff has very harmful to the smoker’s health. In 1990, the report Surgeon General of the United States detailed knowledge. In addition, in recent years there has been a great development in the description of the benefits associated with reducing the consumption of snuff.

Quitting smoking causes an increase in life expectancy for both sexes, regardless of your age. Ex-smokers have fewer health problems than their former colleagues, smokers. They have a lower risk of coronary heart disease (myocardial infarction) and stroke, have fewer complications in the postoperative coronary morbidity and mortality from COPD is lower and there is a decreased risk of developing cancer, especially lung cancer. Nor should we forget the great benefit to the fetus means that pregnant women do not smoke, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy.
The goal of every smoker must always be completely quit, but it is true that partial reductions in cigarette consumption also produce a decrease of the associated risks.

The undoubted benefits of leaving the snuff is accompanied by some disadvantages, mainly arising from the withdrawal symptoms that every smoker suffering ceases to be. These drawbacks are minor and have a little weight on the side of the huge advantages in terms of health and wellness.

Morbidity and mortality
The first and most obvious advantages of smoking cessation on overall mortality showed ex-smokers compared with smokers. After 10-15 years without smoking, your risk of death of ex-smoker becomes equal to that of a nonsmoker.
The benefits of quitting smoking are inversely proportional to the duration of smoking and the intensity, and directly proportional to the age at which they quit smoking. Observed in any age group, for example, the probability of death for a man smoking over 20 cigarettes a day who quit at age 40 is 0.07 (against 0.14 for the following smoking).

We have seen that men and women who quit smoking between 35 and 39 years old, show a gain in life expectancy of 5.1 and 3.2 years respectively, while those who quit smoking between 65 and 69 years have a gain of 1.3 and 1.0 years respectively. A reduction of 40% of smokers in Spain could result in a total gain of more than 57,000 years.
Regarding morbidity, leaving the smoker quickly snuff experienced a substantial improvement in their quality of life, with a significant increase in exercise tolerance and gustatory and olfactory capabilities. Quitting smoking also results in a significant decrease in the number of hospitalizations for both men and women, being more marked reduction in the age group ranging between 45 and 64 years. In addition, smokers who quit have up to 50% less sick leave, 20% fewer days lost to illness and 33% fewer doctor visits.

Cardiovascular complications
The peripheral artery disease and heart disease are clearly related to snuff. It has been shown that coronary risk (myocardial infarction) was reduced as in the first years of neglect of snuff. Moreover, this risk reduction is increasing as time goes on, both men and women. It has also been shown that after quitting smoking reduces postinfarction mortality, the rate of recurrence of stroke and the onset of angina.

Other benefits of smoking cessation have been shown are the regression of arteriosclerotic plaques, favorable changes in lipid profile, platelet operation, plasma levels of antioxidants, the tensional profile and state of adrenergic stimulation.

Regarding stroke, also found that among former smokers is a significant reduction in cases of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, and a clear improvement in cerebral perfusion among older smokers who quit.

Respiratory complications
The most important respiratory disease is associated with snuff chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In contrast, smoking cessation has beneficial effects on respiratory function decline with age. Between 4 and 8 months after leaving the snuff can already see an improvement equivalent to a gain of 75-150 mL of lung capacity. Smokers experience an annual decline in lung capacity of 54 mL per year, while former smokers the reduction is only 31 mL per year.

The benefits of quitting smoking is clearly seen in the reduction of cough and expectoration. In addition, there is evidence of improved immune response, resulting in a lower incidence of respiratory infections.

Cancer
Snuff-dependent cancer is the most studied bronchopulmonary. In the ex-smoker at risk for this cancer is between 4.7-8.9, while the smoker is between 10.9 and 21.3.
The benefits of the cessation of snuff also been demonstrated in the case of laryngeal cancer, which risk reduction is between 25% and 50% compared with smoker. It also reduces the likelihood of developing other cancers such as cervical, bladder, esophagus, mouth and pancreas.

Pregnancy, childbirth and menopause
The main benefit during pregnancy occurs in the birth weight, which is lower among children of smokers. In this case, only the benefits obtained with the complete cessation, and not simply seen as a partial reduction in consumption.
With the cessation also reduces the risk of ectopic pregnancy and prematurity. With respect to menopause, smokers age of onset is advanced 1 to 2 years, while ex-smokers in the advancement is only a few months.

Over 10% of women smoke throughout their pregnancy, and some studies indicate that this percentage is 15% or more. Smoking is associated with an increased risk of premature birth and infant death. Research also suggests that infants of mothers who smoke during and after pregnancy are likely two to three times more likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than babies born to nonsmokers. The risk of SIDS is slightly less for infants whose mothers stopped smoking during pregnancy, even if they started smoking again after delivery.

Of the women who manage to quit smoking during pregnancy, only one out of three stay quit after a year after delivery. Babies of mothers who smoke have the lowest risk of SIDS.

Smoking during pregnancy causes at least one in five babies born with low birth weight. This is because smoking during pregnancy reduces fetal growth. This often causes babies to have health problems as a result of low birth weight. Women who stop smoking before pregnancy reduce the risk of having an underweight baby at the same level of women who never smoked. Women who quit smoking during the first three to four months of pregnancy are less likely than their low birth weight babies compared with those who continue smoking.

Many women stop smoking during early pregnancy. However, women with mood disorders such as depression, often find it harder to quit. Research has found that between one third and half of women who smoke during pregnancy have a mood disorder. It may be more difficult to treat with medication to pregnant women with depression, anxiety and nicotine withdrawal because it concerned the harmful effects that drugs can cause the fetus. Counseling and mental health therapy can help some of these women. If the woman can not quit therapy, you may want to talk to your doctor about other things she can try to quit.

After the birth of a baby, nicotine and other substances in snuff also can be passed to baby through breast milk. This can affect the baby immediately. For example, babies who were breastfed by mothers who smoked half an hour less sleep than babies of mothers who do not smoke (this was measured for 3 ½ hours just after feeding). It is best not to smoke while nursing a baby. But women who can not quit immediately, can make their homes in places where no smoking, smoking after feeding the baby and not before, and as much as possible to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke. Breastfeeding can be more beneficial to give the baby milk bottle, even when the mother smokes.

If you stop smoking during pregnancy, do not go back to smoking again after birth. When tempted to start smoking, seek help immediately. Also, remember that parents who smoke are more likely to have children who smoke. Therefore, if you stay smoke-free, there will be a better chance your child will never start smoking.

The secondhand smoke can affect children’s health
A 2004 study showed that more than one in 10 U.S. children under age six breathe secondhand smoke at home at least four days a week. Studies report that older children whose parents smoke get sick more often. Your lungs are less developed than those of children who do not live around smokers. Bronchitis and pneumonia more often. Cough wheeze more and have a greater degree. In addition, secondhand smoke can cause asthma attacks in children, asthma symptoms worsen and even cause new cases of asthma in children who had never shown symptoms. Over 40% of children who come to the emergency room for asthma live with smokers. A severe asthma attack can cause death.

Children living with smoking parents also get more ear infections. This often causes accumulation of fluid in their ears and they may need surgery to drain the ear canals. Some of these problems may seem insignificant, but they add up quickly: think of the expenses, doctor visits, medicines, school absences, and absences from work often by the father or mother who has to take the child to the doctor. Furthermore, this does not include any inconvenience that has to pass the child.

The benefits of quitting smoking are great to begin with harmful chemicals from the snuff harm the body and inhibit their functions, so that smokers can find many health benefits that become sufficiently motivated to quit smoking and stay decision.

While it is true that quitting smoking can cause a weight gain of about 3 kg, and the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, the benefits of quitting smoking clearly outweigh these disadvantages. In the first week you will notice that your blood pressure, oxygen level and pulse return to normal rhythm and significantly reducing levels of nicotine and carbon monoxide to travel through the blood.

After 24 hours of quitting smoking your lungs begin to clean expelling mucous and other harmful residues, resulting from smoking. At 48 hours the ability to perceive odors and tastes better. 72 hours after quitting breathing becomes easier and the bronchial tubes begin to relax, while your energy increases.

As time passes, after deciding to quit smoking, the benefits also increase:
2 to 12 weeks : Circulation improves and optimizes the functioning of the lungs.
3 to 9 months : Coughs, wheezing and other respiratory problems involuntary, decrease as a result of better lung function, increased up to 10%.
12 Months : At high risk of developing coronary and vascular disease is reduced by almost half, beat that continues even after.

5 Years : The risk of heart attack falls to about half, compared with that of a smoker, also the risk of having a stroke returns to the same people who have never smoked.

10 Years : The risk of lung cancer drops to almost half compared with that of a smoker.
15 Years : The risk of lung cancer decreases, almost reaching the observed in nonsmokers, so does the likelihood of heart disease. If you stop smoking before age 50, joins the benefit of having halved the chance of dying in the next 15 years, compared with smokers.

And if all these reasons are not enough to convince you to quit smoking may be of interest to know that when a person stops smoking will not only benefit themselves but to those around her, such as family and friends.

The benefits of quitting smoking include improved fitness, improved emotional state and also the personal satisfaction of being able to accomplish something so difficult initially, to have achieved a major challenge.
The benefits of quitting smoking outweigh any symptoms caused by the abstinence. For this reason it is useful to know what happens in the body to leave the snuff:
After 20 minutes blood pressure returns to normal, like heart rate and temperature of hands and feet. After 8 hours, oxygen has the appropriate levels for the body, allowing the breath to be more deeper and better oxygenate the lungs. After 72 hours the lungs increase in volume, improving breathing, taste and smell. 12 weeks after leaving the snuff improves blood circulation, as well as the functioning of the lungs. In a period of approximately 9 months is more remarkable recovery as cough, congestion and shortness of oxygen is reduced, likewise the small filaments of the lungs (cilia) begin to grow again. After 5 years without smoking the person reduced by 50% the risk of developing lung cancer while after 10 years the risk is similar to a person who never smoked. The risk of cancer of the bladder, oral cavity and the larynx , and esophagus is reduced by 50% in just a few years after quitting. After 15 years of having abandoned the snuff the risk of heart disease is dramatically reduced to become equal to a person who never smoked.

Other benefits:
Is eliminated snuff smell of clothes, hair, hands, mouth (bad breath and stained teeth, etc.). It prevents premature appearance of wrinkles in the skin itself recovering the appearance of age. Increase physical capacity exercise or other physical activities, as have more oxygen to breathe better. It saves money. makes you feel more satisfied with yourself, feel a greater freedom.
