When you add ammonia (NH3), nicotine passes from the acidic to basic form, which can vaporize more easily from smoke particles, facilitating their absorption into the lungs and pass into the circulation.

    You can’t compare the danger of smoking tobacco to the danger of snuff. The problem with tobacco is in the combustion, not just in the ingredients. So when you change to a form of use where you are not smoking the tobacco you vastly decrease the risk, which is why countries where Snus is popular have some of the lowest rates of lung cancer in the world.
