But if you quit smoking, you’ll benefit your back even more, particularly if you face back surgery down the road. Bone healing is slower in smokers, as is wound healing.
A study on spinal fusion surgery for the lower back found that while 70% of non-smokers were able to return to work after surgery, only about 50% of smokers were able to return to work. However, this risk is reversible if you quit smoking at least two weeks before surgery and refrain from smoking for at least six months afterward.
