nicotine on memoryIn addition to the toxic effects known to all, a new one is added to the list of problems caused by nicotine : the deterioration of skills in learning and memory. This result comes from a study conducted on mice, but such devastating risk to affect neurons of smokers.

The harmful effects of nicotine
It has long been known that nicotine , a substance involved in dependence snuff, stimulates memory and learning functions of smoking occasionally. However, today we know that produces the opposite effect on smoking usual.

This conclusion is suggested by the scientists who conducted the study with mice. The authors focused on a brain region implicated in memory processes. This area of the brain has the curious property of producing neurons throughout life.

Different doses of nicotine, all close to what a smoker inhales, were administered to mice. It was found that the greater the amount of nicotine and the greater the decrease in neuronal production capacity. These changes impact on the skills necessary for learning and memorization.

More recent studies are now needed to formally answer the following question: Are the results of laboratory mice, are valid for the brain man? Everything is seen, but the signs are too obvious to deny them entry.

Nicotine, a chemical which makes smokers addicted to cigarettes is a stimulant with properties similar to cocaine and amphetamines. Acetaldehyde and carbon monoxide, sedatives
Acetaldehyde, a byproduct of both cigarette smoke and alcohol, has sedative properties. Carbon monoxide in cigarettes makes you feel tired, as you would be in a room without enough air. These substances may help some people to reduce tension, anger or strong emotions.

Other psychological effects
For many, the act of smoking itself becomes a comforting ritual. The smoker wrapped in a fantasy that relieves feelings of boredom and stress. Smoking can go hand in hand with other activities such as drinking alcohol or coffee or dessert. These factors are why quitting smoking involves more than getting rid of the nicotine habit.
