All smokers are at increased risk for lung cancer, other lung diseases, cardiovascular problems and other health problems. Smoking during pregnancy can endanger the health of the woman and her unborn baby. Currently, at least 10 percent of women in the U.S. smoke during pregnancy 1.<br />
18 percent of women in the United States and other industrialized countries smoke 2. In developing countries is about 8 percent. Many of these women smoke while pregnant.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The statistics on what happens in the U.S. are strong. If all pregnant women stopped smoking in the United States, the number of stillbirths would drop by 11 percent and the number of deaths of newborn babies in a 5For percent, according to estimates by the Public Health Service of the United United 1 . Currently in the United States, at least 11 percent of women smoke during pregnancy. 2</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Cigarette smoke contains over 2,500 chemicals. No one knows for sure what harm the developing baby, but it is believed that both nicotine and carbon monoxide can cause the pregnancy does not have the desired result.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What causes smoke damage in the newborn?<br />
Smoking nearly doubles the risk of low birth weight baby. In the United States in 2002, 12.2 percent of babies born to smoking mothers with low birth weight (less than 5.5 libras/2.5 kg) compared with 7.5 percent of babies born to nonsmoking mothers. 2 The low weight birth may result from insufficient development of the baby in the womb, premature delivery, or both. Premature and low birthweight are at higher risk for serious health problems during the first months of life, permanent disability (including cerebral palsy, mental retardation and learning problems) and even death.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The more a pregnant woman smokes, the greater the risk to the baby of low birth weight. Also, if you quit at the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, have virtually the same chances that your baby is born with low weight a woman who never smoked. Apparently, smoking doubles the risk of women developing complications in the placenta. 1 These complications include placenta previa, a condition in which the placenta is located in a very low position in the uterus and covers all or of the cervix, and placental abruption, in which the placenta separates from the uterine wall before delivery. In both cases, the life of the mother and child during childbirth are at risk due to excessive bleeding, although in most cases it is possible to prevent death with cesarean delivery. The problems in the placenta determine a slightly higher risk of stillbirth when the mother smokes during pregnancy.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Smoking during pregnancy also increases the apparent risk of premature rupture of the sac (the sac containing the baby inside the uterus breaks before labor begins). 1 In these cases, women may experience spotting or the expulsion of fluid from your vagina abundant. <p style="text-align: justify;">Babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are three times more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome than children of nonsmoking mothers. 1</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Does exposure to cigarette smoke of others during pregnancy is harmful to the baby?<br />
Studies suggest that regular exposure to cigarette smoke from other smokers can reduce the development of the fetus and, therefore, increases the chances that the baby is born with low birth weight. Pregnant women who do not smoke should avoid exposure to cigarette smoke of others.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What can a woman do to quit smoking?<br />
March of Dimes recommends that women stop smoking before becoming pregnant and not smoke during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The doctor may refer you to a smoking cessation program or suggest other appropriate ways to quit smoking. March of Dimes promotes a helper method, five steps that lasts five to 15 minutes called &#8220;Five A&#8221; by the health professional during routine prenatal visits. It has been shown that this method helps to stop smoking at least 30 pregnant women. 4 Even at a later stage of pregnancy, women can reduce risks to the baby quit smoking.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Studies suggest that certain factors increase the likelihood that women quit smoking during pregnancy. Among these conditions are having tried to quit in the past, having a partner who does not smoke, have the support of family or other important people in your life and know the harmful effects of snuff.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">How does the baby&#8217;s exposure to secondhand smoke after birth?<br />
It is important to stop smoking even after the baby is born. Both father and mother should refrain from smoking at home and should ask visitors to do the same. Babies exposed to smoke suffer more problems in the lower respiratory tract (including bronchitis and pneumonia) and ear infections than other children. Babies exposed to smoke from their parents after birth also have an increased risk of the sudden infant death syndrome. The child exposed to cigarette smoke at home during the first years of life at greater risk of developing asthma.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Of course, smoking is also harmful to the health of women: women who smoke have an increased risk of lung cancer and other types, heart disease, stroke and emphysema (a lung condition that can cause disability and, at times death). Quitting smoking improves the health of parents and allows them to set a better example for their children.</p>
